Lash Anatomy and Function Eyelashes are not limited by hair’s role in psychosocial consequences. With every blink, the lashes close access to eye-like curtains.

Lashes are short hairs that grow from the edge of the eyelid.

Upper lashes are longer than lower lashes and can reach an average length of 8mm. They tend to turn upward while the lower lashes turn downward.

The average number of eyelashes on the upper lid is seventy to one hundred fifty lashes and the lower lid generally has sixty to eighty lashes.

These lashes are distributed in three to five layers of eyelashes in the eyelid. The function of eyelashes is to act as a physical barrier to keep insects and foreign objects from the eyes

There are small muscles located in the eyelids which with a muscular contraction by the reflexive and automatic response, blink and close the eye when perceiving a threat such as a particle of dust or any foreign particle that can damage the eyes. The curvature of the lashes also helps sweat and foreign objects to fall out of the eyes.

DIY Techniques for Applying Mascara and Caring for your Lashes

Before applying mascara, make sure your lashes are properly curled.

Using a quality eyelash curler, position it over your upper lashes, making sure they’re as close to the eyelid as possible without touching it.

Press down gently but firmly a few times, then move a little forward up the lash shaft and repeat, moving your wrist upward to shape the curl.

When using your favorite mascara, be careful to only apply it to your upper lashes.

Using the length of the brush, coat your lashes from underneath about 3 - 5 times, making sure to cover every lash, especially the tiny ones on the edges

Made from nature-derived ingredients

Nature-derived ingredients are used to make MD Lash Factor® eyelash conditioners. So they are gentle, non-irritating, and suitable for all skin types. Ophthalmologists have also confirmed that these products are safe for those with sensitive eyes & contact lens wearers.

With professional strength, the MD Lash Factor® Eyelash Conditioner Gold Edition has all the said ingredients. But on top of those, it also contains Vitamins A & E and other antioxidants.

6. What is Lash Anatomy and Function?
Eyelashes are not limited by hair’s role in psychosocial consequences. The function of eyelashes is to act as a physical barrier to keep insects and foreign objects from the eyes There are small muscles located in the eyelids which with a muscular contraction by the reflexive and automatic response, blink and close the eye when perceiving a threat such as a particle of dust or any foreign particle that can damage the eyes. The curvature of the lashes also helps sweat and foreign objects to fall out of the eyes. Similar to other hair, eyelashes are composed of biological polymer, made up of 90 percent proteins (keratin and melanin) and 10 percent of water. Follicles of eyelashes are associated with glands known as the Glands of Zeis and Glands of Moll.

7. What is its Lash Growth Cycle?
Lashes are developed during the 22nd to 26th weeks of embryonic development. When eyelashes are pulled out, will take about two months to regenerate. All mature follicles undergo a growth cycle consisting of the following phases: growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and rest (telogen).

The follicular growth phase lasts about 45 days, the resting phase lasts for three weeks, and the resting and shedding phase for two weeks. After this period, a new lash is regenerated and the cycle begins.

Lash growth is asynchronous. The ratio of growth to inactivity reflects the number of follicles in a growth phase. Up to 75% of eyelash follicles are inactive. This is a contrast to 13% of human scalp hair. Plucking during an inactive phase can actively induce new growth.

There are significant differences in the anatomy of follicles between the upper and lower lids. The upper follicles have greater depth (1.8mm c/w 0.9mm), larger bulb width (188 microns c/w 158 microns), and shaft width (205 c/w 158 microns.).

The upper lid comprised 41% active follicles compared to 15% in the lower lid. The higher proportion of actively growing upper lid follicles explains why upper lid lashes are longer. 8) What are its ethenic chraterstics ?
Although the biochemical composition of human hair is similar between races, the eyelashes of different ethnic groups are not identical. In a study of Asian and Caucasian female subjects, a significant ethnic difference was noted between eyelash Morphology and growth characteristics. The study used the phototrichogram technique to record the total numbers, lengths, and thickness of upper eyelashes and to analyze the curl-up and lift-up angles of upper lashes. Lashes were also cut to measure the regrowth rate. Lastly, electron microscopy used to measure cuticle layer. The study concluded that Asian lashes when compared with Caucasian lashes, showed lower lift-up and curl-up angles, and fewer in density. The cuticle layer and transverse diameter were noted to be greater in Asian than in Caucasians. There was no statistical difference in the growth rate. The duration of the growth phase (anagen) was 2 months with 17.8 % of lash follicles in the anagen phase.
