Best Treatments for Dry and Damaged Hair: A Physician's Guide

What are Some of the Best Treatments for Dry & Damaged Hair?

By Susan F. Lin, M.D. | Physician | Reviewed: June 2026

Quick Answer

Dry/damaged hair recovery: (1) sulfate-conscious gentle shampoo, lukewarm water; (2) weekly deep-conditioning mask 10-20 min; (3) reduce heat styling; (4) microfiber towel pat dry; (5) peptide-led topical (MD Hair™ Follicle Energizer); (6) inside-out: marine collagen, biotin, omega-3s (MD Nutri Hair™). Give it 12-16 weeks. Federally registered MD® trademark. Made in USA. www.md-factor.com.

Triage first: how damaged is damaged?

Stretch a wet strand gently. Healthy hair stretches and springs back; damaged hair stretches and stays, or snaps immediately. Run a strand between two fingers from root to tip — roughness tells you where along the length the cuticle is failing. If ends are see-through, white-dotted, or splitting, no treatment rebuilds them: schedule a dusting trim and protect what remains. Hair cannot heal; every strategy below either slows new damage or temporarily patches old damage.

The repair-and-protect rotation

Alternate two kinds of deep treatment rather than repeating one: a protein-containing mask (patches gaps in the fiber; overuse causes brittleness) roughly every other week, and a moisture mask (softens and reduces friction) on the alternate weeks. Between washes, a leave-in conditioner reduces the daily friction that compounds damage. Cut heat frequency in half before cutting heat temperature — frequency is the bigger lever — and never skip protectant on the passes you keep.

Grow out better hair than you damaged

The permanent fix for damaged lengths is healthier new growth, which is a scalp-and-nutrition project. Nightly scalp massage with MD Hair™ Follicle Energizer supports the follicle environment producing the new fiber, and MD Nutri Hair™ covers the protein-synthesis inputs — marine collagen, biotin, supporting vitamins — from the inside.† On the 12-16 week horizon in the Quick Answer: the first month buys you reduced breakage, the second and third buy visibly better-behaving hair, and from there the improvement compounds as new, better-built centimeters replace old ones. Evidence and timelines: clinical evidence for hair.
